Great Pond Camp

Great Pond CampGreat Pond Camp

Project Location: Rome, Maine

This previously developed site, on Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes Region, offered our clients the perfect getaway camp. While the Maine Lakes and Mountains locale suits their active outdoor lifestyle with nearby hiking and skiing.

The tired existing camp foundation was severely compromised. Our designed additions and renovations included lifting the existing camp to provide a new foundation with full basement. Additions include a screen porch with a fireplace, for indoor / outdoor living, and a two-car garage with a bunk room above; in order to accommodate guest overflow. Working within Maine Shoreland Zoning requirements, the design challenge was to update and improve the camps relationship to the lakefront site within the existing footprint, as well as adding compliant additions. The non-compliant ‘prow’ of the camp facing the water was removed and re-framed to allow for more glass and a better visual connection to the lake.

The finishes, interior and exterior, take their cues from existing local camp vocabulary; including live edge wood siding, cedar shingles, and exposed timber framing. New systems were incorporated to increase the energy efficiency of the building envelope; including new door and window systems and SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) over the existing timber frame roof. The design seeks to blur the new systems with the existing camp aesthetic.

The new screen porches and high performance envelope will provide a long-term indoor / outdoor retreat that performs in all of Maine’s seasons.
