Snowman Farm House

Project Location: Weld, Maine

This beautiful property located on Webb Lake in Weld, Maine, offers incredible panoramic views of Tumbledown Mountain range and Mount Blue. The area serves as a popular destination for avid Maine hikers.

Initially our design efforts focused on renovating the family’s old farmhouse and moving it to a better location on the site, farther from the road and away from heavy winds at its elevated location. Upon further investigation of the existing structure and the cost associated with making it more energy efficient, the decision was made to design and build a new home that would use materials salvaged from the original farmhouse.

Oriented on the site, lower than the old home, the new house sits better protected from the winds that commonly whip down Tumbledown Mountain. The interior spaces are organized to take advantage of the views to the lake and mountains beyond. The first floor includes an entrance with a mudroom, a first-floor master suite, and an open kitchen, dining, and living arrangement that opens onto a screened porch facing the lake and Mount Blue. The second floor includes additional bedrooms and a home office.

Materials reused from the original farmhouse include timber framing, wood flooring, and wood doors. The old stone foundation was left in place to serve as a backdrop for a new garden, while the new materials specified for the home were inspired by the region’s traditional country aesthetic.
