Project Location: Greater Portland, Maine
Located within the woods, surrounded by old New England stone walls, this new residence provides a lifetime home for a young and growing family.
The architectural design process included careful site-specific analysis and orientation of the building program so as to provide a sunny southern exposure to most of the public spaces within the house. The breakfast room and kitchen face to the east for morning sun, while the living room and dining room are oriented on the west side for evening sun. The southern façade of the building is oriented obliquely at the end of a long and winding drive, providing for a welcoming approach to the building.
The farmhouse design aesthetic is inspired by local vernacular, and includes simple roof forms. The exterior includes durable materials that have been used in Maine residential architecture for many years.
